Natural Beauty Trend

Natural ingredients, natural beauty products have hit the world and become a beauty trend. You might have heard that brands claim to have added natural ingredients into their products, but is that really NATURAL?

Let me tell you a secret, the cosmetic products out there could be normally divided into three kinds: conventional cosmetic products, natural cosmetic products without certification, and cosmetic products with natural products certification.

Almost 80% of the beauty products out there are in the conventional category. Usually, they are added with one or more natural ingredients but mix with chemical substances. And natural beauty products are composed of natural ingredients like plants, minerals, or water. But without certification, how could we know if the brand tell the truth or not? In this case, consumers tend to buy products with third-party certification.

ECOCERT

Among the natural product certifications, ECOCERT is a must-know one. Founded in France in 1991, ECOCERT specializes in the certificate of organic products for sustainable development. ECOCERT has two kinds of certifications: organic and natural.
ECOCERT Organic
For the organic label, the beauty products' ingredients should contain at least 95% of all plant-based ingredients, and at least 10% of total ingredients are selected from organic farming.
ECOCERT Natural
To have an ECOCERT natural cosmetic label, a minimum of 95% ingredients should be natural. And at least 50% of all plants and at least 5% of the total ingredients are selected from organic agriculture.

One remarkable point is that some ingredients couldn't be regarded as natural, such as water, salt, and mineral. The reason is these kinds of ingredients are not originated from organic farms.

COSMOS

The difference between COSMOS & ECOCERT
COSMOS is established by 5 natural and cosmetic certification organizations around Europe: BDIH from Germany, Cosmebio from France, Ecocert Greenlife SAS from France, ICEA Istituto per la Certificazione Etica ed Ambientale from Italy, and Soil Association from the UK.

The standard of COSMOS works to bridge the gap of differences between regulations in five existing standard from different organizations.

There are 2 types of COSMOS labels: COSMOS Organic and COSMOS Natural.

The words "COSMOS Organic" and "COSMOS Natural" appear below the responsible certifier's logo, ECOCERT.
COSMOS ORGANIC
For COSMOS ORGANIC, at least 95% of the physically processed agricultural ingredients must be organic. And at least 20% of organic ingredients are present in the total formula (10% for rinse-off products).
COSMOS NATURAL
As for COSMOS NATURAL, there is no minimum organic ingredients content requirement. But the raw material should meet the criteria for each category of ingredients approved for use by COSMOS.

While ECOCERT and COSMOS are two different systems, both express the excellent standard for natural and organic cosmetics and respected by the international beauty industry. Contact us!
